Water 101

The terms you'll hear on a sales call

Know these six and you can evaluate any quote in Texas, ours included.

Grains per gallon (gpg)

The standard measure of water hardness. Anything above 7 gpg is officially "hard" on the U.S.G.S. scale, and most Texas metros sit well above that. Hardness is what causes scale, spotting and soap that won't rinse.

TDS: total dissolved solids

Everything dissolved in your water, measured in parts per million: minerals, salts and metals. It's what reverse osmosis removes for drinking, and what the smart faucet's display shows you in real time.

Chlorine vs. chloramine

Two different disinfectants. Utilities use one or the other, and it changes which media you need. Chloramine is harder to remove and burns through standard carbon much faster.

Grain capacity

How much hardness a softener can remove before it has to regenerate. Undersize it for your household and the system runs out on laundry day; oversize it and you paid for capacity you'll never use.

Up-flow vs. down-flow regeneration

The direction brine travels through the resin bed when the softener recharges. Up-flow uses less salt and less water for the same result, which is what ours does.

NSF certification

Independent, third-party verification that equipment does what its manufacturer claims. It's the difference between a tested product and a marketing claim. Always ask whether a quoted system carries it.
